The Mesciùa
Sapori che ricordano odori. Che riportano a luoghi.
La magia di certi piatti.

The Mesciùa
Mes-ciùa is one of the most representative dishes of La Spezia and one of the most authentic specialities of the Gulf of Poets. Its origins are closely tied to the local area, so much so that its name immediately evokes the city.
The recipe was born in the port area of La Spezia, once an important centre for the grain trade. Its name, meaning “mixture” in the local dialect, also reflects its main characteristic: a simple dish made by combining just a few ingredients. The traditional recipe calls for cannellini beans, spelt and chickpeas, cooked together and finished with extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of black pepper.
It is a wholesome and nutritious dish, also suitable for a vegetarian diet, but above all it is a simple recipe that can be enjoyed by everyone. Served hot, it is particularly comforting on colder days, when it becomes a true local comfort food.
Today, Mes-ciùa can be found mainly in restaurants throughout the Gulf of Poets that continue to celebrate the area’s culinary traditions and keep this ancient speciality from La Spezia alive.
