Haute Wine Bar in Lavagna


In the heart of the historic city centre of Lavagna, in the province of Genoa, halfway between Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Monna Bianca, is Paola Cozzolino’s Haute Wine Bar, created in 2007 in the former cellars on the ground floor of a 16thcentury residence in Via Dante 56. Inside, you can perceive the history of this place through the handmade and perfectly preserved ribbed ceilings, the almost one-metre thick walls, the typical wooden door and hand-blown glass from the ancient workshops.

Monna Bianca wine bar’s culinary offer is based on simple and tasty recipes, genuine preparations with selected raw ingredients, cheese, cured meats, fruit preserves and many other products to accompany the different qualities of wines.


Monna Bianca began its journey in January 2007. The idea, however, was conceived about a year earlier when I was living in the historic centre of Venice, after my Master’s degree in tourism economics and management, and while I was working as a consultant for the Department of Tourism and Culture of the City of Venice.

Living in this eternal city, a place of art, music and museums, but also a place of eccentricity and decadence, of strong contradictions, always extreme and at the same time strangely in perfect harmony, was a truly unique life experience, which almost felt like being suspended in a bubble outside chronological time.

In addition to getting to know almost every corner of “La Serenissima”, I also learnt to enjoy every free moment, meeting new people and frequenting the famous Bacari, typical Venetian inns where people have enjoyed appetising aperitifs since time immemorial.

Why not open a similar, cosy, familiar and refined little place in my adopted town in Liguria?

I therefore returned to Lavagna, where my mother was born and where we still live today.  You can feel the desire to create a place with a cosy and friendly atmosphere where you can sip excellent glasses of wine accompanied by small but tasty dishes, far from confusion and triviality. The wine bar is also a point of reference for young musicians and artists with live music and photographic exhibitions.
