Maissana, a village with such an uphill slope that it seems impossible to build houses – however, in this way it remains the most rustic and wildest territory of Val di Vara, including a small part of Val Petronio -: the relatively small village huddles around the parish building of San Bartolomeo. The municipality, being densely surrounded by tall trees, provides the essential setting for the Val di Vara Adventure Park, built in total respect for the environment and current European safety standards.
Events and Place of Interest
Maissana, whose history is imbued with the exploits of the Ligurian Apuans, fell under the Fieschi family in feudal times and later experienced the strict precepts of the Doria family. Part of these vicissitudes can be witnessed in the Valle Lagorara archaeological site, home to the “Archaeology Laboratory” in Ossegna – here there are documents and illustrative material on the territory of Maissana, as well as an interactive room -, the “Casoni della Pietra”, a wide variety of characteristic temporary shelters for shepherds and animals, the building-fort known as “Prigione dei Fieschi”, dating back to 1200, and the Oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena.
In Tavarone, a hamlet of the municipality, August hosts the impatiently awaited “Festa della Trebbiatura” (Threshing Festival), with dances and peasant traditions. “Sagra del Fungo” (Mushroom Festival), same location, at the end of August, and “Sagra della Fagiolana di Torza” (Torza Bean Festival) in the homonymous hamlet, in October, followed by the “Sagra della Polenta con Cinghiale” (Polenta with Wild Boar Festival) in December.
